Abstract:
Keeping in line with the global perception that nanotechnology holds tremendous promise and is an important area for research investment, BITS, Pilani, a pioneer Institution of Science and Technology in Rajasthan, India hosted a three-day conference-cum-workshop on Emerging Mechanical Technology : Macro to Nano (EMTM2N-2007) from 16th to 18th February 2007. The conference received financial support from UGC, CEERI, CSIR, DRDO, SERC, SBBJ from India; FTD Singapore and Coventor Inc., USA

Going From Macro to Nano in Mechanical Technology: International Conference at BITS-Pilani

Pilani, India | Posted on February 19th, 2007

In the words of Prof.R.K.Mittal, Dean, Academic Registration and Counseling at BITS, Pilani and the conference Chair, the objective of this conference was "to provide an academic and research platform where experts can meet, exchange ideas and learn about each other's research work in order to exploit the phenomenal growth in electronic and allied disciplines and rapidly changing technologies to develop better systems to serve the humanity."

The MEMS ( Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) workshop that preceded the conference had four interactive technical sessions and was held on 16 Feb.2007. The conference was formally inaugurated by Prof. L. K. Maheshwari, Vice-chancellor, BITS Pilani by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Prof. R. K. Mittal delivered the welcome address and introduced the theme of the conference to the participants. Prof. Maheshwari, in his inaugural address lauded the efforts of Prof Mittal and his team for organizing a conference on such an important emerging topic. He reiterated that the impact of Nano technology on Mechanical Engineering and other fields would be similar to the impact of Microprocessor on Electronics and the combination of micro and nano technologies will pave the way for bringing humanity closer and making them happier. In his key-note address, Prof. Chandrashekhar, Director, CEERI, Pilani outlined the emerging scope for nano technology and felt that this will prove to be the motive force for all new developments in science and technology. He emphasized on the need for inter disciplinary research which will ultimately enrich individual disciplines and benefit humanity by solving their complex problems. Dr. Mark G da Silva from Exponent Inc., Massachusetts, USA, who was the guest of honor, emphasized on the need for more and faster development in this area to make human-computer interface more useful.

More than seventy papers were presented and discussed in this conference by the participants from India and abroad. A large participation of international delegates from countries like USA, UK, Canada, Russia, South Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Iran, Poland, Israel, Switzerland and Portugal proved the importance and relevance of the topic as well as the conference. The conference concluded with a great satisfaction and appreciation expressed by the participants and a vow to continue the discussion further.
