IBM Reports Chip Breakthrough
Abstract:
Nanotech Breakthroughs
As Dr. Iyer pointed out, nanotechnology research has become increasingly crucial in chip developments as researchers produce advances at the molecular and even atomic scale.
Last month, scientists at the California Institute of Technology and the University of California reported in the journal Nature that they had built a memory chip roughly the size of a blood cell using molecular switches.
IBM researchers have been working on such chip advances as well and the company's advances have even helped some of its rivals. The company developed High-k, a material that enhances the transistor's function while allowing it to be shrunk beyond today's limits. That was one of the components of the material used by Intel in the latest advance it heralded.
