Abstract:
Raymor Industries Inc. (TSX VENTURE: RAR), a leading developer and producer of single-walled carbon nanotubes, nanomaterials and advanced materials, announces the creation of a new wholly-owned subsidiary, Raymor Aerospace Inc., to address the growing need for HVOF (High Velocity Oxy Fuel) spray coating services on components for landing gears and other commercial and military aircraft applications. HVOF spray coating has become the standard for landing gear coatings on the latest line of new commercial aircraft, including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A380. HVOF is also in the process of becoming standard on older model aircraft still in production, including the Boeing 737, which alone provides the potential for the coating of up to 2500 parts per month once HVOF suppliers are approved. Though Raymor currently offers thermal spray coating services at its Boisbriand facility, the new subsidiary intends to add various processes in the coming months in order to provide the landing gear industry with the potential for a "one-stop shop" for their coating, grinding, surface treatment, and testing needs.

Raymor Launches New Subsidiary, Raymor Aerospace, for Emerging Landing Gear Coating Market

BOISBRIAND, QUEBEC, CANADA | Posted on February 14th, 2007

Canada is home to one of the largest concentration of landing gear manufacturers and subcontractors in the world. With three primary manufacturers, and many more sub-tier suppliers located in the Western Quebec-Southern Ontario corridor, Raymor Aerospace is positioning itself to become a major provider of HVOF spray coating services to this emerging landing gear coating market. With the recent installation of new, aerospace-specific HVOF spray units, the purchase of new laboratory equipment, and the pursuit of industry-specific quality and process approvals (AS9100 & Nadcap), Raymor Aerospace will become approved suppliers for this industry.

The hard chrome plating process uses a chromic acid solution, where the process releases a fine mist into the air. This mist contains hexavalent chromium ions (Cr+6), which is a known carcinogen and a source of other medical problems. The increased costs associated with complying with current and future regulations have driven government and industry to seek alternatives to the hard chrome plating process. In the mid 1990's, the Hard Chrome Alternative Team (HCAT), a US/Canadian team of aerospace and defense companies and government organizations, was formed and was mandated to seek out an alternative technology. After years of collaboration, HCAT determined that HVOF spray coating is the best alternative technology for hard chrome plating, and is ideal for both original equipment manufacturers and for the repair and overhaul of worn components. As a result, new commercial and military aircraft are all adopting HVOF coating for their landing gear components. As well, aircraft manufacturers are introducing HVOF as an alternative to hard chrome plating for the coating of landing gear components on older aircraft (ex. Boeing 737) in the latest specifications.

Commenting on the news, Stephane Robert, President and CEO of Raymor Industries, had the following to say:

"We see a very large market for HVOF coating, particularly for the landing gear industry. The creation of Raymor Aerospace, along with the newly-installed, specialized equipment, will permit Raymor to gain a strong foothold in the aerospace marketplace. Also, the business generated by Raymor Aerospace will reinforce synergies with our other operating divisions, including our nanotechnology operations."
