Abstract:
NaturalNano, Inc. (OTCBB: NNAN) (FWB: N3N) ( http://www.naturalnano.com ), a materials science company, today announced the results of manufacturing scale testing of Pleximer, which revealed superior dispersion of halloysite nanotubes at concentrations in excess of 30% in nylon. This high dispersion led to improved strength and modulus properties in the resulting nanocomposite without sacrificing the natural elongation of nylon. Pleximer, which NaturalNano plans to offer commercially in fourth quarter 2007, is a turn-key nanocomposite additive enabling stronger, lighter, and less expensive materials for the $40 billion dollar polymer composite industry.

NaturalNano Announces Test Results Showing Superior Properties of Nylon PleximerTM on a Manufacturing Scale

ROCHESTER, NY | Posted on February 8th, 2007

"Achieving excellent dispersion of a nanoclay at 30% loading or more is outstanding and unusual in nanocomposites," stated Cathy Fleischer, PhD, President and CTO of NaturalNano. "Dispersing the nanoclay evenly throughout the polymer system is the key to producing stronger, lighter composite materials." The highly concentrated nylon Pleximer product would be added to pure nylon in the final molding process by the manufacturer to obtain nanocomposite materials with the desired properties for a wide range of applications, including automotive, aerospace, sporting equipment, and electronics.

Equally exciting was the discovery that the enhanced mechanical properties seen in the laboratory were retained when Pleximer was processed in the manufacturing plant, where conditions are more demanding and less-easily controlled. The material's strength improved 20-40% with the addition of halloysite nanotube concentrations in the 5-10% range, while maintaining nylon's elongation characteristics. Further testing and validation of the physical properties of Pleximer will be continuing over the next several months. "Reproducing the same properties in a manufacturing plant as those that were obtained in the lab is a critical milestone in the development of any product," Dr. Fleischer said. "These excellent results will contribute significantly to the timing and success of our commercial product launch later this year."

Traditional layered nanoclays require extra processing and specialized equipment to separate the layers and disperse them throughout a polymer system. NaturalNano's halloysite nanotubes, utilizing the Company's proprietary, patent-pending formulation and processes, do not require an extra separation step, and can be run on standard equipment, enabling manufacturers to produce nanocomposites without additional capital investment.
