S. Korea aims to become top 10 science nation by 2010

Abstract:
South Korea will strive to become a global leader in science and technology fields by 2010, the Ministry of Science and Technology said Thursday.

Outlining its policy objectives for 2007, the ministry said the country should be able to reach 10th place in terms of scientific competitiveness and make the top five in technological capability.

"Among the top projects that will be pursued this year will be the use of over 1 trillion won to bolster the country's biotech and nanotech capabilities," said Vice Science Minister Park Young-il.

In the biotech field, the focus will be on human brain research and efforts to slow down the natural aging process. For the nanotech sector, scientists will support efforts to advance nano-mechatronics and the development of tera-level nano materials.
