Abstract:
Harry Hutson and Barbara Perry, management consultants and authors of Putting Hope to Work, today announced that in its February edition the Harvard Business Review has cited the work in their book as one of 20 "Breakthrough Ideas for 2007."
"Many studies have shown that people who score higher on measures of hope also cope better with injuries, diseases, and physical pain; perform better in school; and prove more competitive in sports," said Hutson. "Our contribution has been to outline the elements of hope--possibility, agency, worth, openness, and connection--in a way that guides efforts to nurture it in the workplace."
In past years, HBR has been at the forefront of identifying and analyzing ideas--from Blogs to new innovations in biology, banking, business and more--that have changed our thinking, our ways of relating to each other, the qualities we value, and the way we conduct commerce.
"Every year, the editors of Harvard Business Review have the enviable challenge of putting together the HBR List," write the editors. This year, "Our annual survey of emerging ideas considers how nanotechnology will affect commerce, what role hope plays in leadership, and why, in an age that practically enshrines accountability, we need to beware of "accountabalism."
"Hope is a positive force of action that engages people to work for a better future," said Barbara Perry. "It's present in individual lives, social institutions, and increasingly, as a differentiating factor in winning organizations." Delving into what that force is, how it works, and how it can be nurtured is something leading organizations have worked with Hutson and Perry to capture.
