The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), today appointed Dr. Jillian Buriak as a member of the Council.

OTTAWA, CANADA | Posted on January 29th, 2007

"Dr. Buriak has a strong understanding of university research and the sciences that will benefit the Council," said Minister Bernier. "Her knowledge and experience will provide valuable contributions to NSERC as they continue to promote and support research in universities, government and the private sector."

Dr. Jillian Buriak is currently Professor of Chemistry and holds a Canada Research Chair position in Inorganic and Nanoscale Materials with the University of Alberta. She is also the Senior Research Officer and Group Leader with the National Institute for Nanotechnology. Previously, Dr. Buriak was Associate Professor of Chemistry at Purdue University.

Dr. Buriak has earned several awards throughout her career, including the 2006 Faculty of Science Research Prize from the University of Alberta, the Martha Cook Piper Research Prize in 2005 and the American Chemical Society's Pure Chemistry Award in 2003. In 2003, she was recognized as a member of Canada's Top 40 Under 40, a program that honours Canadians who have reached a significant level of success before the age of 40.
