ANALYSIS: Drugmakers Set High Hopes On Nanotech-Based DDS Drugs

Abstract:
The prolonged absence of new drugs on the market reflects the rush by overseas and domestic drugmakers to develop DDS (drug delivery system) technology that uses nanotechnology to deliver existing cancer drugs to patients in capsule form.

On Jan. 4, the Ministry of Health finally approved a cancer treatment that has been available abroad for 12 years. Authorized for the first time here as a treatment for AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma, Doxil, a niche drug developed by Janssen Pharmaceutical KK, marks the beginning of nanotech-based DDS drugs in Japan.
