Scientists say it's now 11:55, Self-Destruct Time
Abstract:
A group of eminent physicists has issued a dire signal to the international community, warning that nuclear proliferation and global warming are endangering civilization.
Officials at the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists yesterday moved the minute hand on their Doomsday Clock two minutes closer to midnight and figurative Armageddon. It now reads five minutes to midnight. The clock's minute hand, which is moved forward or backward, has not been this close to doomsday since 1953, when U.S. and Soviet hydrogen bomb tests pushed the clock to two minutes to midnight.
Looking at advances expected in biotechnology and nanotechnology, Sir Martin Rees, noted cosmologist and president of Britain's Royal Society, said he was concerned about the potential for converting advanced biological and manufactured materials into new kinds of weapons.
