It also implies that many patent applications exceed the expertise of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Consider the young and burgeoning field of nanotechnology, in which researchers and entrepreneurs rush to the Patent Office to protect their discoveries. These applications frequently are for obscure processes that involve multiple disciplines and may or may not mark true innovations. At the same time, the 8,000 employees of the Patent Office reviewed 332,000 patent applications in the last fiscal year, granting almost 180,000, or almost 700 a day. It's hard to believe that every one of them was appropriate.
