India Of rocket science
Abstract:
Last week, Hilde led a German television crew to the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, trying to unearth the role the IITs have been playing as vanguards of India's technological progress. The trip to Kharagpur, which entailed studying the aerospace, cryogenic and nanotechnology departments at the IIT and meeting with its professors, also put into perspective the work the team from ZDF, one of the two leading public television channels in Germany, are doing in India. "Just outside Kharagpur we found farmers still using an ox to plough the fields, while at IIT we saw great progress being made in the technological front. The students seemed to know that they are privileged to be there and are ready to work hard and compete in the world," says Hilde. The lady is directing the India leg of the two-part, 90-minute documentary that traces the technological and socio-economic evolution of Asian countries like China, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and India.
