Naomi Halas on nano pH meters at IIT/Chicago

Chicago, IL | Posted on September 20, 2006

Illinois Institute of Technology Dept. of Biology, Chemistry & Physical Sciences Kilpatrick Series lecture on nanotechnology featuring Dr. Naomi Halas, professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Chemistry, and Director of the Laboratory for Nanophotonics (LANP) at Rice University, Houston.

The lecture takes place on Friday October 6, is open to the public, and free registration is required: www.iit.edu/alumni/alumnifest/2006/register.php

Best known as the inventor of nanoshells, Halas was recently featured in National Geographic for her groundbreaking work in nanotechnology. Most recently, she was lead researcher in the development of a nano-sized pH meter with wide applicability to biologists, including non-invasive ëoptical biopsiesí to determine the malignancy of tumors through pH changes inside living tissue and cells.

Dr. Halasís team included IIT assistant professor Sandra Bishnoi.

Halas is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and recipient of the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award and ěCancer Innovatorî Award from the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs of the U.S. Department of Defense.
