Abstract:
By 2008, the Institute for Future Materials will be established on the innovation campus, fusing the Intelligent Polymer Research group, the Australian Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science and the Institute of Superconducting and Electronic Materials. Building on an established international reputation for nanobionics, the science that bridges the interface between biology and electronics, the centre will also house an atomic force microscope that uses carbon nanotube probes to allow chemical and electrical maps of surfaces and interfaces to be obtained with nanometer resolution. It already has Australia's first automate nanotube factory, commissioned in March this year, which allows researchers to design and generate carbon nanotubes that can transmit electrons 1000 times faster than copper wires.
