Abstract:
Matt Ford: One goal of micro- and nanotechnology is the creation of a broadly applicable "lab-on-a-chip." This is a device that is capable of reproducing the functionality of a chemical/biological laboratory on a small chip (dimensions of centimeters or millimeters on each side) that which would only need extremely small volumes of materials for use. One application I have often heard discussed as an excellent candidate for lab-on-a-chip technology is drug detection for use by EMTs or emergency department physicians in the field.
