The Soft Side of Hard Goods

Abstract:
New nanotechnology applications will eventually allow appliance makers to dramatically improve the structural performance of plastic. By manipulating atoms and molecules, it’s possible to create materials that are lighter, stronger and able to withstand a wide range of temperatures. “Nanotechnology will be used more in the future to address structural integrity issues,” says Ticona’s Dugas. “Plastics such as polypropylene will benefit from the technology. We’re paying close attention to what’s going on in the auto industry.”
