UMass scores NSF designation for nano research
Abstract:
In a coup for the state's flagship university, the National Science Foundation has selected the University of Massachusetts Amherst as a specially designated national center for nanotechnology research. The appellation comes with a $16 million purse from the foundation, $2 million in state-matched funding and the pride that comes with beating out some of the top science-and-engineering schools in the nation.
The center -- designed to create efficient ways to manufacture nanotechnology devices such as those used in the materials science, life sciences or semiconductor industries -- will likely put UMass in a stronger position to receive future federal nanotech research and development funds.
