Host - Science and Society

San Diego, CA | Posted on April 03, 2006

Dr. David Lemberg, Executive Producer of "Science and Society" announces the show schedule for Wednesday, 04/05/06, 1PM to 2PM Pacific.

Of particular interest to Nanotechnology Now readers are interviews with:

  • Dr. Lisa Randall, Professor of Theoretical Physics, Harvard University, and author of “Warped Passages: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Universe’s Hidden Dimensions”
  • Dr. Katie Klinger, Faculty Associate, George Lucas Educational Foundation, and Primary Designer, National University Virtual High School
  • Dr. Michael Deem, John W. Cox Professor in Biochemical and Genetic Engineering and Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Rice University

Professor Randall discusses her brilliant new book, “Warped Passages”, which was included in The New York Times list of 100 notable books of 2005. We’ll talk about warped spacetime geometry, extra dimensions, the new supercollider (LHC) coming online at CERN in 2007, and exciting new developments in physics and what they mean for us in our day-to-day living.

Dr. Klinger discusses innovative, replicable educational models such as the NASA Explorer School in Waimea, HI. Dr. Klinger also discusses sex-based differences in disease processes including heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, focusing on the La Jolla Institute of Molecular Medicine's Innovations in Women's Health Research lecture series.

Professor Deem discusses a new treatment for dengue fever, the most important mosquito-borne viral disease affecting humans in 2005. The innovative multi-site vaccination strategy, termed polytopic vaccination, may be effective against other diseases as well, including HIV and cancer.
