Optical barcodes show promise as labels
Abstract:
Researchers at Southampton University in the UK have developed an optical tagging technique based on nanostructured grating patterns. The team says this approach can encode up to 109 distinguishable particles and is ideal for non-contact barcodes as well as high-throughput screening. "Our main vision for the use of these barcodes is as tags in combinatorial chemistry, so tagging individual molecules with labeled micro-beads," Sam Birtwell, one of the team members at Southampton, told Optics.org.
