Abstract:
A Vision for Building Industries of the Future in Canada with Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology or "Small Tech" is a series of technologies that work at the nanometer scale, one-billionth of a meter. Not only is nanotechnology the miniaturization of semiconductors beyond “micro,” these tiny technologies are capable of interacting with living matter at the molecular scale, of producing wonder materials with vastly superior properties, and of fabricating high performance devices with unprecedented capabilities. Nanotech, in combination with innovations in biotech, info tech, wireless and new materials will enable a new generation of breakthroughs in information and communication technologies, medicine, military, energy, and environmental technologies, while at the same time create synthetic materials that reduce the need for natural resources from mines, oil fields, and forests. These breakthroughs will create new commercial opportunities and industries, while at the same time make portions of traditional industries obsolete.
Government agencies, multinationals and financiers worldwide are investing billions of dollars each year into nanotechnology research and commercialization to be part of this industrial revolution. While Canadian nanotechnology research is world-class on many fronts, Canada is one of the only industrialized countries without a National Nanotechnology Initiative and is lagging other countries in the commercialization of nanotechnology research. This presentation provides a vision for how Canada, led by Ontario, can build industries of the future with nanotechnology.
