SMI announces it has received additional funding for VLA optical coatings

Structured Materials Industries, Inc. (SMI) reports that it has received Phase II funding from the Air Force / MDA to develop a large area MOCVD tool to produce very low absorption (VLA) optical coatings.
The program builds on a successful Phase I effort that demonstrated enhanced reflector coatings for 1.06 µm laser radiation. The goal for the Phase II effort is to scale the technology to coat 0.5 meter components, and ultimately to produce VLA coatings on high energy laser mirrors up to 1.5 meters in size. The picture below shows a field emission SEM image of a representative optical coating stack, produced by MOCVD at SMI, illustrating the excellent film thickness and uniformity control.
