Abstract:
Clayton Brown: So what’s the next big thing? It may well be nanotechnology, something very Stanfordesque. A seemingly abstruse term, nanotechnology simply means controlling matter on the sub-100 nanometer scale (one nanometer = 10 atoms). Nanotech thus implies the nexus of the sciences and engineering at the atomic scale, where the traditional distinctions between chemistry, biology and physics finally blur into the same quantum playbook.

(Ed.'s note: "nanotechnology simply means controlling matter..." well, he's close, if you are talking nanoscale materials science. A better definition would include how some materials exhibit different properties at the nanoscale, 1 - 100 nm.)
