Abstract:
Nanotech think tank poised for growth
Palo Alto, CA. | Posted on December 09, 2005
Foresight Nanotech Institute announced today the
appointment of Marc Lurie as President. Lurie brings to Foresight more than a decade of
experience building and managing technology-oriented organizations through high-growth
periods. Prior to joining Foresight, Lurie founded and as CEO helmed @hand, a software and
services company delivering mission-critical mobile solutions to large enterprises. As CEO, Lurie
pioneered customer relationships within the Fortune 500 and long-term partnerships with large
system integrators. Marc also guided the company through three rounds of financing totaling over
$21 million, while building a high-performance organization with a strong customer-service ethos.
Prior to @hand, Lurie rose through the ranks in several successful technology start-ups, including
Acuity (acquired by what is now Avaya), where he served as the senior marketing executive for
nearly three years, and Vignette (VIGN), where he served as Director of Channel Marketing. Lurie
also developed a background in domestic and international intellectual property rights and
protection during his tenure as an associate with the IP group of the law firm of Reid & Priest
(now Thelen Priest) in Washington, D.C. His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Arts
from U.C. Berkeley and a Juris Doctor from Cornell Law School. He is also a private investor,
whose interests include several innovative vertical wind tunnels where people fly indoors.
Lurie succeeds Scott Mize, who was recruited to reshape the Foresight Nanotech
Institute in response to rapid changes and growth in the nanotechnology field. Specifically,
Foresight broadened its vision from encouraging awareness and development of nanotechnology
to ensuring the ethical and beneficial implementation of nanotechnology in the global economy.
Under Mize, Foresight also launched the Technology Roadmap for Productive Nanosystems and
built relationships with top industry and research institutions around the world. At this time, Mize
has chosen to return to his for-profit career, leaving Foresight in the capable hands of Marc Lurie.
"Foresight thanks Scott for his many contributions. Under his leadership, Foresight invested over a
year of intellectual capital to develop new products and services to simplify and accelerate
interdisciplinary collaboration in nanotechnology research and development," said Christine
Peterson, Founder and Vice President of Policy and Research at Foresight. "Based on the number
of thought leaders already participating in these projects, we anticipate significant growth in the
coming year. Marc's background in intellectual property, international law, and business
development are critical to nanotechnology and should help to advance Foresight's mission globally."
