Professor Reshef Tenne Named 2005 MRS Medalist

Reshef Tenne ApNano Materials, Inc. (www.apnano.com), a provider of nanotechnology-based products, today announced that its Chief Scientific Advisor, Professor Reshef Tenne, was awarded the prestigious Materials Research Society (MRS) medal "for realizing that nanoclusters of layered compound materials (e.g., MoS2, WS2) can be made to fold into hollow cage structures, in analogy to graphitic carbon. These structures, known as 'inorganic fullerenes,' constitute a materials class with exciting new properties.”

The MRS Medal is awarded for a specific outstanding recent discovery or advancement which has a major impact on the progress of a materials-related field.

Prof. Reshef Tenne is the Head of the Department of Materials and Interfaces at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, and Director of the Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for Nanoscale Sciences, director of the G.M.J. Schmidt Minerva Center for Supramolecular Architectures and holds the Drake Family Chair in Nanotechnology.

ApNano Materials was granted an exclusive license by Yeda Research and Development Co. Ltd, the commercial arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science, to manufacture, commercialize and sell a new class of nanomaterials based on the inorganic compounds that were discovered by the group headed by Prof. Tenne. Dr. Menachem Genut, ApNano Materials' CEO was a research fellow in the original research group which discovered the IF nanoparticles at the Weizmann Institute and first to synthesize the new material.

"Our first commercial material based on the inorganic fullerenes that we have discovered at the Weizmann Institute is NanoLub – the world's first nanotechnology-based solid lubricant. It reduces friction and wear significantly better than conventional lubricants, especially under extreme conditions such as very high loads. NanoLub is used as an additive to oils and greases, formulated as an anti-friction coating, and used for the impregnation of metal parts."

"The scientific breakthrough of Prof. Tenne and his group has attracted the interest of investors who have invested in ApNano Materials as a company which is the forefront of nanotechnology," said Aharon Feuerstein, ApNano Materials’ Chairman of the Board.

Recently ApNano's nanoparticles were recognized as excellent shock absorbing materials and among the most impact resistant substances known in the world today. The experiments on the IF nanomaterials were carried out by a research group headed by Prof. Yan Qiu Zhu of the School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, at the University of Nottingham, England.

ApNano Materials has also been selected as a Top 100 Innovator by Red Herring.

The special properties of the IF nanostructures have attracted numerous interest from industry around the world. To date large quantity production of the IF has been achieved by the company at its facility in the Weizmann Science Park, Nes Ziona, Israel and work is underway for a scaled-up semi-commercial unit to product 100-200 kg/day which will be followed by a full industrial production facility to produce tons of material per day.
