Sarnoff To Commercialize ExxonMobil's Nano Materials In Non-Petrochemical Markets

Fairfax, VA / Princeton, NJ | Posted on November 28, 2005

Sarnoff Corporation of Princeton, New Jersey, today announced a five-year strategic agreement with ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company (EMRE) of Fairfax, Virginia, under which commercialization opportunities for EMRE's groundbreaking portfolio of mesoporous materials will be identified in markets outside of the petrochemical industry.

The materials, which include novel high surface area silicas, are among the first nanomaterials ever created and have been commercialized by ExxonMobil for its own use. Under the agreement Sarnoff will work with EMRE to position these materials in other markets, such as electronics and optics, where their unique properties offer significant advantages over current materials.

Sarnoff is also pursuing select third party participation in developing electronic systems and devices based on these nanomaterials. Opportunities in other applications will also be considered.

According to John Riganati, vice president of technology strategy for Sarnoff, both technical and business factors played a role in determining the initial areas of development.

"Sarnoff and ExxonMobil considered eight possible startup projects and chose three for initial exploration," said Riganati. "The selection was based on both the technical advantages of the materials and their business potential in each area."

EMRE's mesoporous materials include various types of molecular structures that can be tailored to the needs of a specific application. Sarnoff (www.sarnoff.com), formerly RCA Labs, is an international innovation services and product development company focusing on advanced technologies and applications in video, microelectronics, imagers, and related fields.

EMRE is the downstream research and engineering arm of ExxonMobil Corporation, a leading global oil, natural gas, and petrochemicals company whose subsidiaries have operations in approximately 200 countries and territories. More information regarding ExxonMobil and technologies it licenses can be found here.
