After 34 Years, Goals Change In Medicine's 'War On Cancer'

Abstract:
Another futuristic area of research is in nanotechnology. That could fine-tune targeted treatment by delivering drugs to the specific site of the disease. Analysts see nanotech as too way-out for investment purposes.

But the NCI is investing big in the idea. Early in October it handed out $26 million in awards to seven Centers of Excellence in nanotechnology. The agency is also working on multidisciplinary research through its NCI Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer. Barker is bullish on nanotech, saying it's already producing commercial uses.
