Light gets the message out

Abstract:
A nanoscale molecular valve that opens and closes in response to light has been devised by researchers in the Netherlands, who hope to use it for optically controlled delivery of drugs. Ben Feringa of the University of Groningen and his co-workers chose to make their nanovalve from a bacterial protein channel called MscL. ...the researchers made a version of their nanopore that would open within two minutes of UV irradiation, and close again within seconds of being irradiated with visible light.
