Wayne State plays host at World Expo 2005 in Japan

Wayne State University will be part of the first World Expo of the 21st century in Aichi, Japan when it hosts two exhibition days there in the U.S. Pavilion on July 13-14.

Expo 2005, which is being held from March 25 through Sept. 25, is expected to draw 15 million people from around the globe. The Expo’s theme is “Nature’s Wisdom.”

“The Japan Expo affords Wayne State University the unique opportunity to engage in a global activity such as the World Expo in the amazing city of Aichi, Japan,” said Wayne State President Irvin D. Reid. “I am pleased that Wayne State is able to lead the discussion on the important topics of nanotechnology and global business issues, both are topics that scholars at our university are actively researching. We trust that our activities at the Expo will allow us to forge significant and lasting relationships with other scholars and leaders of industry alike.”

Wayne State will be the sole university from Michigan at the World Expo hosting events in the U.S. Pavilion. Those events include: WSU International Symposium on Nanotechnology – “Nanoscience in the Understanding of Nature” on July 13 and Wayne State University Business Day – “Global Business Issues of the 21st Century” on July 14. A five-minute film about WSU will be shown on a big screen outside the U.S. Pavilion throughout both days. In addition to university officials attending the Expo, four WSU students will also make the trip.

"This is an outstanding opportunity for Wayne State University to be showcased on the global stage," said Harvey Kahalas, dean of Wayne State's School of Business Administration. "Both the nanotechnology symposium and business day program demonstrate that Wayne State University is on the cutting edge in the development of innovative applications of technology to the business arena. This international event is a natural outgrowth of the university's overall global mission."

The Nanoscience symposium will highlight global technology and research programs involving universities, industry and government. Prof. Bhanu Jena, the George E. Palade University professor in the department of physiology in Wayne State’s School of Medicine, will host the symposium.

The Wayne State symposium is geared to bring together an international nanotechnology consortium and highlight the application of nanoscience technology. According to the National Science Foundation, advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology promise to have major implications for health, wealth and peace in upcoming decades. Among expected breakthroughs are:increases in computer efficiency, human organ restoration using engineered tissue, and the emergence of new discoveries in biology, chemistry, physics and engineering.

Wayne State's business day at the World Expo in Japan will bring together a wide range of expertise from all sectors including: The Wall Street Journal Japan presenting global business trends and reporting practices over the past centuries; Lex Mundi law consortium discussing regional business issues; Kelly Services (workplace and workforce); The Aspen Institute (governance); Toyota Motor (transportation and environment); researchers from Wayne State and Seoul National University discussing technology and a representative from the Japan Diet will address government’s role in future business and global economics.

The WSU Business Day program is organized and hosted by the WSU School of Business Administration. Wayne State University's School of Business Administration has received sponsorship support from Lear Corporation. Sponsorships will assist Wayne State University students and faculty involved in the World Expo activities.

Chris Collins, a WSU faculty member and co-director of the Jazz Program at the department of music who will be touring Japan July 5-29, will also perform at the Japan Expo during Wayne State’s event.

Wayne State’s Alumni Association also is taking this historic journey to Japan for the World Expo from July 9–19. The group of alumni and friends will also tour cultural and historic sites including: Imperial Palace Plaza in Tokyo; Todaiji Temple in Nara and Kinkakuji Temple in Kyoto.
