Abstract:
Revolutionary active ingredient for sunscreens and cosmetics
Oxonica Ltd, a leading UK nanotechnology company, has announced that its revolutionary active ingredient for sunscreens and cosmetics, Optisol™, can provide the highest level of protection from UVA and UVB for more than 8 hours, as demonstrated by a consistent 5 star (Ultra) rating performance using the Boots UVA star rating system. Many sunscreens, including major brand names, rapidly lose their effectiveness over time, as the components are broken down by sunlight.
Optisol™ is a specially modified form of titanium dioxide, which is traditionally used in many sunscreens to protect against UV. A small amount of manganese is incorporated into this patented product. The manganese acts as a free radical scavenger and also minimises the formation of new free radicals. Free radicals are created by UV light and are a major cause of skin ageing and damage.
The addition of manganese also changes the white colour of the titanium dioxide to a more natural skin colour tone. Consumers, who have tried Optisol™ based sunscreens, have reported a ‘natural glow’ effect when applied to the skin.
The first commercial product to contain Optisol™ is Boots’ new Soltan Facial Sun Defence Cream, which is available in UK stores now. Oxonica is currently in discussions with other leading manufacturers of sunscreens and cosmetics and looks forward to a wide variety of OptisolTM enhanced products being available to buy on shelves in the near future.
Kevin Matthews, Oxonica’s CEO said:
“Optisol™ is the key to the next generation of sun protection products. It provides excellent protection against UVA, as well as the traditional UVB protection. This is very important as, until recently, UVA was not considered an important factor in sun damage to skin, but it is now believed that UVA is just as damaging. Also, speaking as a parent, the fact that Optisol™ is able to keep on protecting for eight hours or more with one application is a tremendous breakthrough.”
Oxonica points out that swimming, sweating, physical abrasion, etc. will lead to the need to reapply sunscreens containing Optisol™ UV Absorber.
