MEMS-based metal detectors show promise
Abstract:
We're all familiar with metal detectors used in airports, schools and many government buildings. Now imagine if those detectors were practically microscopic in size, buried underground, and so sensitive that they could detect a rifle carried by a person standing 150 feet away. It's the kind of technology advance that has security and military experts intrigued. Researchers at Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs and mPhase Technologies recently developed a mini metal detector from silicon.
