Paint, Coatings has Personal Care Covered

Abstract:
Nanotechnology is a big buzz word today in many industries. “There are a lot of conferences being sponsored on nanotechnology,” said Brezinski. “It’s funny because … we have been using particles in coatings that have been defined as ‘nano-sized’ for many, many years.” There is a great deal of work being done in this area and it’s highly competitive and proprietary. “All major players are in this area and they’re not talking, “ said Dr. Darlene R. Brezinski. She added, “And I know that governments worldwide are spending enormous amount of funding in nanotechnology research, so we will see significant breakthroughs.”

The personal care industry knows nanotechnology, too. Applications include nanoparticles of titanium dioxide in sunscreens or nanoemulsions used in skin treatments to penetrate the stratum corneum (SC) and deliver active ingredients. Some safety concern has been raised as far as the level of penetration these chemicals reach. Regardless, it is a hot area of research and development.
