Gee whiz! And India techs it all
Abstract:
(3rd article) Wristwatches that can store 1,000 compact disc loads of data. Robots that foray into the human body to deliver drugs at a specified spot or fix defective genes.... The science of the miniature - nanotechnology (one nanometre is one billionth of a metre) - promises to deliver all this and more, and India has begun efforts to ensure it does not get left behind.
A nanoscience initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), started in 2003, has now identified and equipped research units to carry forward India's nanotech hopes. Research funding of nearly Rs 50 crore is being pumped in this year. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, the IITs, Madras University, Pune University and the Benaras University are some of the institutions working in the area.
