Making strides
Abstract:
The city of San Francisco contains about 100,000 more people than the state of North Dakota, and its metro area anchors 125,000 more businesses than does Oklahoma. Its dominance in micro and nanotechnologies has helped California gallop past Massachusetts, New York and other states in the early stretch of a race for economic leadership.
But while Small Times' top 10 states jostle for win, place and show, back-of-the-pack competitors like North Dakota and Oklahoma see opportunities for advancement. Among the darkest of dark horses, they're nudging ahead with ambitions of building their research and industrial capabilities into magnets for business.
