RIT, on 175th birthday, looks ahead to future
Abstract:
Swords made of the coveted metal were both sharp and strong — traits European sword makers hadn't mastered. The reason was the minuscule layer of metal fibers that formed the surface of Damascus steel, said Rochester Institute of Technology researcher Ryne Raffaelle.
That principle — the use of the very, very small — will power one of the key technologies impacting everyday life in the future, the director of RIT's NanoPower Research Laboratories told a crowd assembled in the university's Student Alumni Union to celebrate the past.
