State could be big player
Abstract:
Despite its relative youth and high risk, experts say nanotechnology could be a good fit for Arizona.
The state's expertise in computer-chip manufacturing and its budding role in genomics and biotechnology could easily converge to make it a nanotech player, they say. That is because the semiconductor business has been heading toward nanoscale manufacturing for years, and biotechnologists work at the level of DNA, proteins and viruses that are just nanometers wide.
"Nanotech is not an industry. There are companies that use it in pharmaceuticals and textiles. It's a basic enabler," said Matthew Nordan, vice president of research at New York-based Lux Research Inc.
