Abstract:
Self-assembled monolayers are commonly used to improve the 'body-friendliness' of medical implants. But how long do they last in the body? Molecular films used as a biocompatible coating for micro- and nano-engineered biomedical devices are unstable in biological environments on timescales of several weeks, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge report.
