Jack Uldrich: From Kitty Hawk to Mars

Abstract:
One hundred years ago today, Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved flight. It was an extraordinary accomplishment - and it portended even greater accomplishments. On this historic anniversary, it is therefore appropriate to cast our eyes again to the future of manned flight and imagine the possibilities. Last week, President Bush signed into law a $3.7 billion bill to officially establish the National Nanotechnology Initiative. I can tell you that nanotechnology is going to have significant applications for fields as diverse as material science, health care and energy. What does this have to do with the future of manned flight? In a word: everything.
