Nanotech industry wary of Next Big Thing syndrome
Abstract:
US president George W. Bush has this week given official blessing to what could be the Next Big Thing in technology, signing over $3.7bn (£2.6bn) for four years' research in the field of nanotechnology. But for the scientists and entrepreneurs who are starting to flock to the area, the increased profile conferred by such backing already feels like a mixed blessing. After the internet investment bubble and the public relations disasters surrounding genetic engineering, nanotechnology's acolytes are wary of their sudden prominence.
