Big breakthroughs in tiny technology
Abstract:
Researchers at the University of Kentucky have found a way to fashion an exotic form of carbon into specialized membranes that could lead to new drug delivery systems for medical patients, highly efficient filters or improved fuel cells to power automobiles. The team so far has produced only small sample membranes about 1 inch square. But scaling up to commercial sizes should not present insurmountable problems, said Bruce J. Hinds, a chemist with UK's Department of Chemicals and Materials Engineering, who led the research.
