Switchable surfaces sweep ahead with polymer brushes

Abstract:
Researchers from Iowa State University, US, have created nanoscale switchable surfaces using Y-shaped polymer brushes. The surfaces assembled into different nanoscale clusters according to whether they were exposed to water or an organic solvent. “For the first time, we have created switchable-surface nanostructures with a characteristic dimension on a truly molecular scale, about 10 nm,” Vladimir Tsukruk told nanotechweb.org. “That is well below any spatial dimensions achieved before.”
