Tie me to the moon

Abstract:
A "space elevator" is exactly what American researchers say we could be using in 15 years. The lift would consist of a paper-thin ribbon of film, no more than a metre wide, stretching 100,000 kilometres into space. The bottom would be anchored to a platform in the Pacific Ocean. The top would be attached to a satellite serving as a counterweight. Cargo - and astronauts - would simply board an automated "crawler" that would climb the ribbon into space. Anyone stepping outside about 36,000 kilometres up would find themselves in a day-long Earth orbit. (more on earlier article)
