Communicating to Keep Nanotechnology Safe
Abstract:
The story of the atomic bomb shows that humans are capable of developing technology that is both beneficial and destructive. After all, nuclear knowledge has not only brought us the atomic bomb, but also cleaner and cheaper power in the form of nuclear energy. Today, nanotechnology is quickly becoming regarded as similarly Janus-faced. Filled with promise, it has also inspired fear. Fortunately, I think that we can avoid them if scientists take responsibility for improving communication with the public, and for increasing transparency.
