US to study societal implications of nanotechnology
Abstract:
The National Science Foundation, US, has awarded two grants for the study of the societal implications of nanotechnology. The awards, each worth more than $1 m, will go to academics at the University of South Carolina, US, and the University of California, Los Angeles, US. “Like any powerful new technology, nanotech also has the potential for unintended consequences,” said NSF director Rita Colwell, “which is precisely why we can’t allow the societal implications to be an afterthought. The programme has to build in a concern for those implications from the start. (more on earlier article)
