 | March 15th, 2011 Green Chemistry Makes Many See Red John DiLoreto CEO/Founder, NanoReg Green chemistry. What is this savior that will rescue our doomed planet from the evils of toxic chemicals? One basic premise is that they can be eliminated from many products by simply replacing them with non-toxic chemicals. In theory, this would make a nice situation where we would never have to be exposed to toxic substances and the new substances will be safe because we have designed substitutes which will not pose any threat to man nor beast. I remain skeptical but others are convinced this goal is achievable. | May 23rd, 2010 The Steady Drum Beat of Nanotechnology Regulation John DiLoreto CEO/Founder, NanoReg In earlier columns I focused on the regulation of nanotechnology by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). The Agency, perhaps emboldened by calls for TSCA reform and introduction of the Safe Chemicals Act, has taken a more aggressive enforcement stance and recently announced its intention expand this role under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). The statute regulates pesticides and antimicrobials but federal officials have been largely silent on the impact of nanotechnology under the statute. | April 15th, 2010 2010 To Be a Busy Year for Regulation of Nanotechnology John DiLoreto CEO/Founder, NanoReg On April 15th congressional leaders were busy announcing legislation to tighten chemical regulatory policy in the U.S. The House of Representatives released a discussion draft of legislation to revise the Toxic Substances Control Act while the Senate released a draft bill to enact changes to the primary chemical control law that has been in effect since 1976. The draft legislation would appear to steer away from nano-specific regulations but many of the proposed changes will deeply impact the nanotechnology community. Recent presentations by EPA officials provide a richer understanding of the changes taking place within the Agency's approach to chemical regulatory policy and more specifically, where nanomaterials fit into that policy.
