Abstract:
Today marks the start of the NanoKTN's NanoRegen Mission to Germany and Austria, organised in partnership with the Science and Innovation Network, Berlin and Chemistry Innovation KTN. The mission, which runs from 4th - 7th September 2012, will see six leading UK companies and academics, specialised in developing materials for use in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, visit centres of excellence in Leipzig, Berlin, and Vienna, and will conclude with attendance at the 3rd TERMIS World Congress. The mission is being led by Professor Chris Mason, Head of the Regenerative Medicine Bioprocess Group in the Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering at UCL.

Mason comments, "Regenerative medicine is an exciting field in which to be working and I can, with confidence, say that we are already starting to produce the medicine advances of the future. Our challenge now, as the cell therapy industry grows, is to ensure we work together to enable it to rapidly fulfil its promise of becoming a competitive and sustainable multibillion-pound global healthcare sector."
The UK, Germany and Austria all have significant expertise within the multidisciplinary field of regenerative medicine and further product developments will continue to require the convergence and co-operation of the life, physical, engineering, nanotechnological and clinical services. It is necessary to ensure UK companies and academic institutions find collaborators with whom new ideas can be formed and where challenges can be solved. It is to support the creation of such collaborations that the UK's Technology Strategy Board funded the NanoKTN to run this NanoRegen Mission.
The UK delegation comprises of The Electrospinning Company, Giltech Ltd, Neotherix, Orla Protein Technologies Ltd, Pharmidex and University of Oxford and each will be given the opportunity to speak at the workshops arranged at the Fraunhofer IZI, Leipzig and the British Embassy, Berlin.
The NanoRegen Mission 2012 is the seventh international mission that the NanoKTN has been involved with, all of which have been a fantastic success. By hosting the missions, the NanoKTN aims to help raise the profile of UK nanotechnology, providing SMEs with opportunities to drive forward international business development. This NanoRegen Mission aims to raise the profiles of UK companies abroad and help foster links with overseas suppliers and potential customers, ensuring the future of UK nanotechnology is embedded in the global market.
"International missions are hugely valuable to UK SMEs and academics. At the NanoKTN we support the exploitation and commercialisation of nanotechnologies and the aim of this mission is to help UK SMEs explore what is available in Germany and Austria. The four day mission will provide a major networking opportunity and platform for the UK delegation to present its work and we are sure it will see the same success we have seen with past missions," says Dr Alec Reader, Director at the NanoKTN.
The NanoMissions offer support to UK SMEs that are short on time and money, helping them financially to organise overseas business development opportunities. The NanoKTN offers travel grants of up to 50% of costs to eligible SMEs.
NanoRegen Focus Group

This group was set up to aid the advances in nano-structured materials and biomaterials for use in tissue engineering. NanoRegen brings together researchers, clinicians, industrialists and other experts in this area to enable this community to share ideas and experience, collaborate effectively and to secure the project funding which allows the development and commercialisation of key opportunities.
About NanoKTN:
The NanoKTN facilitates the transfer of knowledge and experience between industry and research, offering companies dealing in small-scale technology access to information on new processes, patents and funding as well as keeping up-to-date with industry regulation. The four broad areas that the NanoKTN focuses on are: Promoting and facilitating knowledge exchange, supporting the growth of UK capabilities, raising awareness of Nanotechnology, and providing thought leadership and input to UK policy and strategy.
About the Chemistry Innovation KTN
Chemistry Innovation is the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) for the chemistry-using industries. It is industry led and backed by the Technology Strategy Board. Chemistry is a key-enabling science for a major part of the UK economy and it is Chemistry Innovation's mission to support the chemistry-using industries and to drive innovation and value for them. This includes chemical and pharmaceutical sectors such as healthcare, home and personal care, food and drink, polymers, crop protection and lubricants, as well as sections which require substantial chemistry input.
The combined value of the UK chemistry-using industries is a total GVA of over £270 billion. Chemistry innovation works on the community's behalf to deliver: Unique networking opportunities; project identification and collaboration; an influential voice to funders and strategy makers & a coherent strategy and priorities. Linking UK SMEs to collaborative partners in the UK and abroad is a key priority.
