Abstract:
The Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN) was set up by the Technology Strategy Board to promote and facilitate knowledge exchange, support the growth of UK capabilities, raise nanotechnology awareness and provide thought-leadership and input to UK policy strategy.
The year ahead already looks busy for the NanoKTN, with three of its key flagship and longest standing events Nano4Life, HiPerNano and NanoEntrepreneurs coming up in the next couple of months.

NanoKTN Event Preview
The NanoKTN facilitates the transfer of knowledge and experience between industry and research by offering companies dealing in small-scale technology access to information on new processes, patents and funding, as well as keeping up-to-date with industry regulation.
By hosting events and workshops, the NanoKTN offers a forum to its members where all parts of the supply chain can interact and forge partnerships and collaborations. These events support the exploitation and commercialisation of nanotechnology by informing and facilitating innovation and encouraging collaborations between suppliers and users through the development of focus groups. These focus groups work to identify the gaps in the supply chain as well as identifying the UK's potential in innovation. This information is reported back to the Technology Strategy Board and provides leverage for channelling government funds into specific areas of need.

Nano4Life 2012 - Converging Nanotechnology with the Life Science Industry

This one-day annual conference and exhibition, now in its fourth year, will explore the convergence of nanotechnology and healthcare.
Over the past decade there has been significant interest in the promise that nanotechnology holds for international life sciences and more specifically, healthcare. The current interest in nanotechnology is driven by the many advances that this area of nano-science promises. However, despite the advanced developments in this area, the industry is still relatively new and there are a number of gaps in the supply chain that prohibit products getting to market in an effective manner. Nano4Life 2012 aims to bring together the UK supply chain to interact and examine the convergence of nanotechnology and healthcare, and discuss current developments and capabilities.
Nano4Life 2012 will feature presentations from the four technical areas aligned to the NanoKTN's Healthcare and Life Sciences theme's focus groups, including Nanotechnology in the BioPharmaceuticals Industry, Nanotechnology in Regenerative Medicine, Nanotechnology in Medical Devices and NanoMedicine. Speakers include the Dean of Medicine at UCL, Atelix Ltd, Pharmidex, The Electrospinning Company, Sharp Laboratories of Europe, Medical & Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), UCL's School of Pharmacy, the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences at the University of Glasgow, SR One and Eversheds.
The NanoKTN encourages all sectors of the supply chain to register for Nano4Life 2012 including research-based pharma, biotech and medical device companies, academics, research policy makers and anyone who is interested in learning about what nanotechnology has to offer the life sciences.
HiPerNano - the NanoEngineering Event

Innovation is recognised as key to increased productivity, competitiveness and for opening new markets. NanoEngineering is increasingly beginning to have a commercial impact within the performance industry, providing a new innovation toolkit for product design, manufacturing and maintenance.
This year the NanoKTN's annual HiPerNano conference is being sponsored by the IET and will showcase the developments in nanomaterials, nanocoatings and nanodevices currently being used to solve engineering challenges.
Performance engineering industries face the challenges of ensuring product reliability and performance under a range of extreme environments such as temperature, pressure, friction, wear, corrosion, stress and impact. HiPerNano 2012 provides a unique opportunity to network with industry peers and to find out the latest developments in materials, coatings and systems currently providing engineering solutions to the challenges faced by manufacturers and operators.
The event is relevant to all engineering sectors including aerospace, automotive, rail, oil and gas, wind energy and power generation, as well as nanotechnology developers and manufacturers.
ALSTOM Grid Research and Technology and the Technology Strategy Board will provide the keynote presentations at HiPerNano 2012 and the day will then be split into a number of technical sessions including Tribology, Nanocomposites, Aerodynamic Flow, Barrier & Protective Coatings, Graphene & New Materials, and Sensors & Monitoring.
NanoEntrepreneurs London Workshop

The fifth NanoEntrepreneurs focus group, hosted in partnership with University College London, will showcase company experiences of nanotechnology commercialisation, outlining the challenges being faced by those working in this market and how they are being overcome. Presentations and networking opportunities aim to facilitate interactions to further economic success in the UK nanotechnology market.
The current challenge for the UK economy is the rebalancing of the manufacturing sector and the rapid scale-up and successful commercialisation of ideas in emerging nanotechnologies into desirable products. Key to this success is the encouragement and development of well informed, robust and high value added companies. However, there are barriers and challenges facing the commercialisation of nanotechnologies.
The one-day workshop will provide delegates with an opportunity to hear from leading business and academic figures from the UK in this field who will deliver rapid fire presentations on exploitable ideas and business services which enable commercialisation. Presentations will also be delivered by investors, tax advisors, business service providers and other key enablers in the commercialisation process. Case study presentations from existing nanotechnology companies will also outline some of the key challenges being faced over the years and how they have been overcome.
NanoEntrepreneurs will see presentations from Applied Nanodetectors Ltd, Endomagnetics Ltd, NanoSight Ltd, Cella Energy, Eversheds, Marmalade Box and Pronovotech Limited.
Applications are currently being sought from SMEs active in the Nanotech space with investable ideas and technologies that are ready, for a 5 minute, 2 slide elevator pitch. Applicants should send a 300 (max) word abstract to by Friday 30th March 2012 outlining the product or service which needs additional funds for development. Priority will be given to those which are seeking initial and additional private capital but open innovation pitches will also be considered.
The NanoKTN recommends that any companies looking for investment and collaboration partners, investors looking for business opportunities, academics with bright ideas or students who want to learn about business, should attend this workshop.
