2005 Foresight Prize in Communication

Last Updated: Monday, 20-Apr-2015 19:51:36 PDT

From the Foresight Nanotech Institute website: "The Foresight Institute Prize in Communication recognizes outstanding journalistic or other communication endeavors that lead to a better public understanding of molecular nanotechnology and its high social and environmental impact. This prize was created to encourage continued responsible coverage of molecular nanotechnology as a means for engaging the public in dialogue leading to improved public policy on this important issue. This prize was established in 2000."

"The 2005 Foresight Institute Prize in Communication was awarded to Rocky Rawstern, editor of the widely read website, Nanotechnology Now. Rawstern provides a digital forum where accurate information about the transformative aspects of science, technology and engineering is available. Through this website, he has educated the public about the long-term benefits and concerns about nanotechnology."

"This award recognizes outstanding journalistic or other communication endeavors that lead to a better public understanding of molecular nanotechnology or other key emerging technologies of high social or environmental impact.

By offering this Prize, Foresight hopes to encourage continued responsible coverage of molecular nanotechnology and other emerging technologies as a means for engaging the public in dialogue leading to improved public policy on these important issues.

Special thanks go to the law firm of Millstein & Taylor, PC, which underwrites the Prize, and to Foresight Senior Associate Larry Millstein of that firm, who initiated this program."

Rocky's speech: "We started Nanotechnology Now nearly five years ago. Wanting to play a role in shaping the debate over nanotechnology, we agreed that creating a website dedicated to the public would be the best way that we could contribute. At that time we had no idea how rapidly the need for it would grow, nor how quickly technologies would be developed that took us towards molecular manufacturing.

20,000 news postings and hundreds of interviews later, I am convinced that nanotechnology has the potential for enabling tremendous change.

Understanding and harnessing that potential is one of the greatest challenges humanity will face in the 21st Century. Along with the Foresight Nanotech Institute, the Center for Responsible Nanotechnology, and others around the world, I am confident that together we can help ensure a future of prosperity for all."
